*** PRESS RELEASE ***

It won’t be a dog-day-afternoon, when dog enthusiasts and owners alike bask in the splendor of summer at Camp Aguinaldo in the second edition of Run for Aspins on May 6, 2017.

While the race continues to raise awareness on responsible pethood and pet adoption from Philippine Animal Rescue Team (PART), a significant part of the event will focus on dogs’ “other” purpose in life. We know that aside from being great pets and companions, dogs can be trained to become formidable soldiers, especially in the area of security and surveillance, peace and order and even extreme military operations.
Some K9 Units of the AFP have started to adopt aspins (mixed or unknown breed) because they have been found to be easy to train and maintain, compared to some purebred canines. Therefore “aspins” is no longer just your average asong kalye, but can become purposeful military working dogs.

The AFP-GHQ (in Camp Aguinaldo), in cooperation with counterpart K9 Units within the armed forces, will be holding a K9 Mini-Olympics and Exhibition again within this year’s race. The K9 display of talent will show the general public how K9s are trained to be part of the country’s line of defense. In addition, this will also demonstrate solidarity within the ranks, towards the direction and mandate of an institutionalized ARMED FORCES.

As in the 1st edition, registrants can either run solo on 10K or 5M distances, or choose a 2KM or 600M distance if they want to participate with their dogs.

To make the race even more exciting, the race shirt has been re-designed as a hoodie on top of the other race packet inclusions when you sign up for the race.

Each registration contributes as much as 20% to the rescue projects of the PART and to the building of additional K9 facilities in different AFP Units. If we can be more generous, our beneficiary-partners will also be setting up donation boxes in the Race Expo. For inquiries, they will all be on hand on race day to lend support, understanding and information.

National Geographic celebrates 8 years of environmental advocacy with Earth Day Run 2017

April 23, 2017 marks another of raising the public’s consciousness about environmental issues and health and fitness for National Geographic, which celebrates its eighth straight year of holding Earth Day Run. Presented by the channel and its partners Cherifer Premium and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), Earth Day Run 2017 aims to continue the tradition of being one of the biggest running events in the country, expecting scores of running enthusiasts and Eco Warriors to register and run for the environment. The event will be held not only in Manila but simultaneously in the cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Taichung, an initiative that was adopted last year and effectively spread the vision and advocacy of Earth Day Run across Asia.

At Earth Day Run 2017, National Geographic will be celebrating eight years of social awareness through fitness with special program features using the hashtag #8withEDR. With the hopes of mobilizing all the Eco Warriors of previous Earth Day Runs, this year’s event welcomes all previously registered participants with VIP treatment and special loyalty perks to be enjoyed on the day of the run. Participants from previous Earth Day Runs will be given priority placement in front of the starting line at the beginning of the race and can claim their loot bags and finisher shirt at a special express booth. They can also make use of a special warm-up and cool down tent before and after the race to condition themselves and recover in comfort.

This year’s new participants can also join in the celebrations for Earth Day Run’s eighth anniversary by visiting the 8 Years of EDR Gallery at the race village and learning about what the event has accomplished over the years, including the environmental and social initiatives it has benefited with the help of its registered runners. Visitors to the gallery will learn how their participation at Earth Day Run has made a significant impact on certain communities in the Philippines as well as how their actions as individuals can affect the environment.

Earth Day Run 2017 in Manila will be held at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, where participants can join 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K categories. The event encourages and welcomes all types of Eco Warriors to take part, from fun-runners of all ages to the serious marathon runners who regularly compete. This year, Earth Day Run will also be sporting new features for its runners. As a special treat, all race kits will come with LED shoelaces, serving as a badge of pride and as a safety precaution for Eco Warriors running at night or before sunrise. Prizes will also be given to costumed runners who showcase their creativity by coming in their best ensemble made from recycled materials. Finally, to make each Eco Warrior’s voice heard in this run for the Earth, advocacy banners will be hanging above the finish line so that each runner can grab them as they cross to make a shout-out for the environment, keep as a souvenir, and use for all their post-run selfies to amplify the message of acting now to save the environment.

Last year, Earth Day Run participants ran to benefit such causes as saving the Irawaddy dolphins at the Malampaya Sound Research and Conservation Project in Palawan; giving the Earth Hour or “Gift of Life” village in Monreal, Masbate sustainable solutions that reduce carbon footprint; conservation of the Marine Protected Area and coral reef in Apo Reef in Occidental Mindoro; and beefing up reforestation efforts in the Ipo Watershed in Bulacan, which supplies Metro Manila with fresh water. Registered runners at Earth Day Run 2017 will not only experience a fun day of outdoor fitness by joining this year’s event, but will also be doing their part in contributing to National Geographic’s environmental efforts.

“Earth Day Run 2017 will be the biggest version of the race yet, with more expected participants from Manila and four other cities across Asia. We’re also excited to look back on our eight years of environmental advocacy and share and celebrate with our runners the positive change that they helped make possible through the years by joining Earth Day Run. We hope that Earth Day Run 2017 not only brings communities of running enthusiasts together for the common cause of saving the environment but also that it amplifies the important message of doing your own part today to help stop climate change and commit to sustainable solutions to save our beloved planet Earth,” said Charo Espedido, Director and Head of Content and Marketing at FOX Networks Group Philippines.

Interested runners of all ages can join National Geographic’s Earth Day Run 2017 by registering at natgeoearthdayrun.com and from March 1 to April 16, 2017.

UNICEF Celebrity Advocate for Children Anne Curtis launches the ‘Heroes for Children Run’ for the benefit of children most in need, especially in their first 1,000 days of life.

At the contract signing and press launch of the #HeroesforChildrenRun, a benefit run for UNICEF Philippines mounted by Celebrity Advocate Anne Curtis (right); with UNICEF Philippines Representative Lotta Sylwander. The run on 25 October 2015 at the SM Mall of Asia Grounds will feature 21k, 10k and 5k runs; as well as a 500-metre dash for children below age 12. All proceeds of the run will be donated to the '1,000 Days' campaign of UNICEF, focused on child nutrition and maternal health. At the contract signing and press launch of the #HeroesforChildrenRun, a benefit run for UNICEF Philippines mounted by Celebrity Advocate Anne Curtis (right); with UNICEF Philippines Representative Lotta Sylwander.

The run, slated for 25 October 2015 Sunday, at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, is the first major fundraising initiative by Anne Curtis since UNICEF appointed her as Celebrity Advocate last March. “I am very much invested in health and fitness. I thought a benefit run that demonstrates health and wellness is a great way to raise resources to support children to have the best start in life! Proceeds from the run will help fund UNICEF’s ‘1,000 Days of Life’ campaign,” said Curtis.
UNICEF and partners launched the ‘1,000 Days’ campaign through a series of legislative advocacy forums with the House of Representatives and the Senate last July. The central theme is, ‘Ensuring the Right Start to Life through Optimal Maternal and Child Nutrition: Building a Stronger Nation’.
“In the Philippines, at least 3.4 million Filipino children are stunted. Undernutrition accounts for over half of the 95 daily under-five child deaths. The ‘1,000 Days’ campaign will focus on much needed health and nutrition support in the critical first thousand days of the life of a child: from conception through pregnancy, to childbirth, and through to the child’s second year and beyond,” said UNICEF Country Representative Lotta Sylwander.
“UNICEF greatly appreciates Anne’s initiative to raise funds to support the critical needs of young children’s health and well-being. She is personally leading this event and has mobilised her own networks and resources to make it happen.” Added Sylwander, “I accompanied Anne on her first field visit with us. She is committed not only to learn, but also to contribute in changing the lives of the Filipino children for the better. Her popularity and large fan base is an asset in drawing due attention to the needs of Filipino children.”
The run will feature a 500-metre dash for kids (age 12 and below); 5k, 10K, and 21K.
Online registration for the Heroes for Children Run is open at www.takbo.ph/heroesforchildren until 11 October 2015. In-store registration will run from 23 September to 21 October 2015 at the following Chris Sports outlets: SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM City North Edsa, SM City BF Paranaque, Glorietta, and Market! Market!
Organised through running partners Leadpack and Takbo.ph, the Heroes for Children Run is presented through the support of SM Mall of Asia, PSBank, Double Dragon Properties Corporation, Enervon, SM Accessories, Belo Essentials, Cherry Mobile, Jack ‘n Jill, Toy Kingdom, SM Cares, Philippine Star, Nyxsys Philippines Inc., Chris Sports and Discovery Suites.

Alaska IronKids Run Event

It’s good to be a kid!  Better if you are an active kid! And best if you are an Alaska IronKid!

Alaska IronKids Run Race Thropies

Last June 1, I watched young kids aged 6 to 14 years old compete in the Alaska IronKids Run Race event that happened at the SM Mall Of Asia grounds. I saw kids who have the makings of an elite athlete.

IMG_0539

At the starting line of the 8-10 age category

I was also fortunate to talk to Coach “Ringo” Borlain, father of elite kid Tara Borlain (poster kid of Alaska IronKids).

Coach Borlain was my P.E. professor back in college. (Don’t ask the year, baka ipitin ako ng biceps ni Coach… hehehe.) We had a long talk (I’ll ask permission if I can write most of it), but in essence Coach Borlain said that it’s great that Alaska came up with these kind of events only for kids.

Coach Borlain also said not to put pressure on kids and let them enjoy. Although Tara, I think is in another level. I even heard her say that she wasn’t able to beat her target time. And this coming from the first placer on her age category! I can see from her face that she was disappointed. But when Coach Borlain hugged and told her that she did great, Tara beamed with a smile (sayang di ko nakunan ng picture).

Next event for Alaska IronKids will be on June 30 (Aquathlon), Aug 3 (Triathlon) and Oct 20 (Triathlon). For more information please check out http://ironkidsphil.com/2013/
