Taking a break from running

November 4, 2014 Leave a comment

Yes, I am taking a temporary break from running. Well… technically, I don’t really run on races. I’m more of a walker. And a fast one at that.

I’m not kidding. I walk fast.

It’s been more than a week since my last race (10/26 Rexona Run 2014). In all of my long runs above 10K, I always challenge myself to finish races with minimal or no running. You may ask why? Well, I can’t maintain a run pace from start to finish. But I know I can maintain a fast walk pace.

How fast is my walk pace? Let’s just say, my “normal” walk pace is around 14km/hr. And by “normal”, I mean outside of races.

But after the unfortunate incident last Oct 26, I am now forcing myself to walk slow. I am now afraid to do my “normal” walk because I fear that my heart rate (HR) might act up again.

Below are the splits, dist and ave pace from the starting line upto km 15 of the Rexona Run 2014 where i stopped to declare DNF from the race.

That’s all walk. I tried to maintain a steady pace even while going up the flyovers in Roxas Blvd.

Now, I have to slow down. And I envy those people I see who run around the BGC area.

But, I’ll be back. I’ve been here before, and I’ve bounced back.

Not even a torn ACL kept me from finishing a few ultras. ūüėČ

See you on the road…

P.S.

Big Thank you! to the Medics of RunRio during the Rexona Run 2014 race. I’d love to finish the race, but my health and safety is more important.

and a BIGGER THANK YOU to BOO TOLEDO for being my “guardian angel” during that moment. Hart! Hart! :p

Of Incessant Complaining (IC), Indirect Bullying (IB) & Ass-Kissing (AK)

August 3, 2013 2 comments

This would have been a long post. But after having my fix of a solo run earlier, I decided to trim it down and try to be direct to the point.

INCESSANT COMPLAINING (IC)

Incessantadj. continuing without interruption; unending: an incessant noise.
Complainingadj. expressing pain or dissatisfaction of resentment.
https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary

Don’t ICs ever get tired of complaining? I mean, ICs complain the same issues over and over. Issues of long lines, loot bag contents, too many people, high registration fees, etc…STFU

I’ll try to help and explain how ICs can somehow address these “issues”.

  • Long Lines – Position yourself in front. Then make sure that you finish and make it to the top 10. Simple ‘di ba?
  • Loot Bag Contents – Next time, don’t join a race. Spend your “registration fee” money in buying groceries.
  • Too Many People – If you don’t want to see many people, again, don’t join a race. Dun ka lang sa inyo.
  • High Registration Fees – Organize your own race. With just P50 or even lower as registration fee. Kahit 5K lang.

Tip for ICs. Four words… THE-ROAD-IS-FREE

INDIRECT BULLYING (IB)

characterized by threatening the victim into social isolation. This isolation is achieved through a wide variety of techniques, including: spreading gossip, lies, rumors, name-calling, silent treatment…
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_indirect_bullying_and_direct_bullying

IBs usually starts with name calling and attempts to get others “agree” to an issue (almost always a negative one) wherein the subject of the issue is nowhere in sight.

I’ll focus on the name-calling. The following is what I hear (and see in FB) from the IBs… Kulot, Kalbo, Bokal, Tanda, Taba, Payat, Tangkad, Negro, the list goes on.

When you say “Kulot”, we already have an idea who “Kulot” is. No harm done, you might say. But add “Hoy” or “Itong si” and raise the tone of your voice. Iba na ang dating di ba?

I’m “Kalbo” or Bald in English. I’ve accepted and embraced my “Baldness”. But not just because I’m comfortable with me being Bald, doesn’t give you the right to call me “Kalbo”.

ASS-KISSING (AK)

catnoun Slang: Vulgar. the practice or an instance of attempting to curry favor by the excessive use of compliments, praise, or the like.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ass-kissing

This will be short… AKs sometimes doesn’t even want a favor. In the FB world AKs publicly praises “known people” in the community, and usually gets a “high” when these “known people” click the like button of their comments/status or “agree” with them.

It goes up another level when this AK is also an IC and an IB.

Finding An Alternate Sport After An ACL Injury

August 7, 2012 Leave a comment

After I teared my right ACL last May, I never attempted to run or join a single race…

I am that scared. Scared that I¬†might aggravate my injury. But now that the swelling is completely gone, I’m trying to walk my “normal” walk.

If you know me personally or have seen me walk. My “normal” walk is about 11-15mpk. Although I’m more careful now. Before,¬†I don’t care even if I accidentally step on a hole or sprain my ankle a bit.

But since I can’t “run”, I decided to re-learn swimming. Yes, re-learn. I first learned to swim when I was small. I grew up near the Manila bay and I learned to swim in the ocean because of my grandfather who was a fisherman.

Now why re-learn swimming… 2 years back, a friend of mine saw me swimming in a lap pool. After my first lap, my friend told me that my swimming style is “langoy dagat”. Curious, I watched him swim. I didn’t see anything different from my swim… Except that his was more relaxed.

June 2012, my ultrarunner and aspiring triathlete friend Jet taught me basics of TI (Total Immersion) swimming. It was hard at first since I’m trying to erase from my system the “langoy dagat” swim.¬†And after 2 sessions and me watching TI instructions in Youtube (there are¬†tons of TI videos in youtube), I can now swim 500meters continously.

But there’s still a lot to learn. Thanks to Jet for the free TI instructions and Mayor CJ¬†for the free swim entrance at the Pasay Complex.

For now, I’m happy that I have an alternate sport as I can’t “run” yet. And I think this injury is somewhat a blessing in disguise as I¬†was forced to embrace swimming once again.

And hopefully, keeping fingers crossed I’ll be able to join IM 70.3¬†in 2013.

So you want a Race Kit?

November 3, 2011 Leave a comment

Image: graur razvan ionut / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Ito yung legal, try mo…

1. Mag-ipon at mag-register (kaso, magastos ka kaya wala ka pang-bayad)

3. Magpa-sponsor (ang taray!!!)

Kaso, kung desperado. Di kita kukunsintihin. Ika nga, “Try at your own risk”.

Image: chanpipat / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Pero seriously… if wala talaga pang-register. Marami naman kalsadang pwedeng libreng takbuhan.¬†

Bakit Why?!?

“Don’t take the first step, if you’re planning to cheat… ” – Anonymous

May naabutan ako dalawang mama.

tapos di sinunod yun 10AM pare… ginawang 12PM pare… bad trip pare. I did not take my vitamins pa naman pare. And my yaya, she got mad pare… nabastos dun sa claiming area pare… maygaaadddd…”

Are you drugs???

(eto nakalagay sa official website —> *For those who are unable to personally collect their Race Entry Pack, please fill out and print the letter of authorization. Your representative must show this form along with a copy of your Confirmation Slip). Mahirap intindihin? Ayaw mo maniwala?
  7. IF!

Or wala lang talagang kaibigan, period.

“Eh hindi pare eh….”¬†

Humihithit pa din!

May Nagtanong Ulet!!!

October 10, 2011 2 comments

May Nag E-Mail!!!¬†
